Do people know that the 1890 pandemic was likely caused by another coronavirus, OC43 (that was then novel?) Nowadays, no longer novel, it is one of the causes of the common cold. We're obviously not living in the OC43 pandemic since, and we won't live in a COVID pandemic forever.

Also some of the issue seems to be some think viruses always evolve towards less virulence—not necessarily, selection pressure is on transmission—but then others conflate that correction with lessening severity due to immune memory (true regardless of host or virus evolution).

Yes, agree vaccines much better than for flu. Although important to note that normally flu immunity doesn't protect for 20 years because the virus evolves: 1977 was special case of re-appearance of unchanged virus. CoV undergo antigenic evolution too (https://journals.plos.org/plospathogens/article?id=10.1371/journal.ppat.1009453 …).
