Do people know that the 1890 pandemic was likely caused by another coronavirus, OC43 (that was then novel?) Nowadays, no longer novel, it is one of the causes of the common cold. We're obviously not living in the OC43 pandemic since, and we won't live in a COVID pandemic forever.

I'll reshare this piece by @dylanhmorris on why the *novel* part of the phrase "novel coronavirus" is key. There are two ways to make the virus no longer novel to one's immune system: vaccination (yay lowest risk) or infection (the risky, dangerous path).https://www.theinsight.org/p/novelty-means-severity-the-key-to …

Of course, OC43 remains dangerous to the elderly—especially those living in nursing homes—because humans aren't immortal and our immune systems fail as we age, and congregate living is especially dangerous. For the immunocompetent: OC43 causes the common cold and no crisis.

Personally, I'm for aggressive public health measures—too much preventable suffering. We don't put up with food poisoning, so why not better ventilation or other measures against respiratory illnesses, for example. But SARS-CoV-2 isn't some virus that stands against all biology.

We have very strict food standards for restaurants and, more importantly, for the food supply chain. Not the same as saying there's no food poisoning especially at homes or mild cases. People used to die in droves before it got regulated. Now, you walk into a supermarket...

Interestingly, I did a systematic review of the effects of food inspections in limiting food borne illness outbreaks as a resident in 2007--and was of limited effect in the few trials that had been completed. All to say, many plausible interventions fail in the real world...

You're talking about the current baseline, though. I don't expect to die from food I purchase in a supermarket or eat in a restaurant, and if I do, it would be a scandal and a violation of both our norms and our laws/regulations. That didn't just happen+

I was comparing to the pre-regulation world in the transition to mass food production/urbanization: where milk would get embalmed with formaldehyde, cheese dusted with lead and eating safely wasn't straightforward at all.

To me, it is the difference between systems and individual level interventions. Most of what protects us are systems-level interventions including in food...less so focused on the individual.https://twitter.com/sdbaral/status/1344328167201370114 …
