Do people know that the 1890 pandemic was likely caused by another coronavirus, OC43 (that was then novel?) Nowadays, no longer novel, it is one of the causes of the common cold. We're obviously not living in the OC43 pandemic since, and we won't live in a COVID pandemic forever.

We still accept, as a society, that 100,000+ people will be hospitalized each year b/c of food poisoning. We accept that 30,000+ will die each year in traffic fatalities. The list goes on....That is NOT to say we shouldn't do more to reduce covid deaths,

but this is a respiratory disease, and calls for aggressive PH measures, in many cases, end up doing more harm than good.

Interestingly, I did a systematic review of the effects of food inspections in limiting food borne illness outbreaks as a resident in 2007--and was of limited effect in the few trials that had been completed. All to say, many plausible interventions fail in the real world...

You're talking about the current baseline, though. I don't expect to die from food I purchase in a supermarket or eat in a restaurant, and if I do, it would be a scandal and a violation of both our norms and our laws/regulations. That didn't just happen+
