Do people know that the 1890 pandemic was likely caused by another coronavirus, OC43 (that was then novel?) Nowadays, no longer novel, it is one of the causes of the common cold. We're obviously not living in the OC43 pandemic since, and we won't live in a COVID pandemic forever.

I thought it was an H2 flu? That's fascinating...is this based on banked sera?

The evidence for the hypothesis is the estimated date of divergence from the bovine CoV it appears to be descended from, and from the contemporary accounts of neurological symptoms that are more in line with a CoV than Flu. It's possible either way.

As a further aside, it's interesting that the report from Chicago in 1891 differentiated the 1890 and 1891 outbreaks, with 1890 characterized with more pnuemonia but 1891 with more frequent bronchiolitis. Perhaps the answer is "both", with overlapping pandemics.pic.twitter.com/o4juDYQFs0

Once we're on the subject: any smart ideas about why influenza supposedly disappeared for much of the late 19th century?

On similar note, I wonder how much new stuff we could learn if we looked at the last 150 year with what we've learned/better learned this pandemic.
