Do people know that the 1890 pandemic was likely caused by another coronavirus, OC43 (that was then novel?) Nowadays, no longer novel, it is one of the causes of the common cold. We're obviously not living in the OC43 pandemic since, and we won't live in a COVID pandemic forever.

Just tying it here, too! (I had found the anosmia & loss of taste pretty striking as evidence of non-influenza since, as far as I know, that is not something we see in human influenza but now we know is an hCoV thing. But please someone find lung tissue).https://twitter.com/renegadenarwhal/status/1442532000678637572 …

I could swear I saw an old set of lungs in the attic. But you can never find them when you want them

You didn't ask me, but I find the anosmia more convincing than the age structure of severity - I think the latter is just about novelty (ie, it's more about us humans than about the pathogen). All-cause mortality has a similar trend (https://www.bmj.com/content/bmj/370/bmj.m3259.full.pdf …)pic.twitter.com/EH6iZqKLrA

I'd always want to ask you. :-D I was struck by the "perverted" smell and taste in the historical descriptions. Also the sequelae incidentally. Brain fog, fatigue, post-exertional malaise...pic.twitter.com/11ARL1PQ15

Flu also has skewed age distribution w higher mortality among elderly, although not as extreme as COVID-19.
@MichaelWorobey refers to evidence of *lower* mortality among those >70 in 1968 H3N2 pandemic presumably from antibodies to H3 from 1889 pandemic (https://www.pnas.org/content/111/22/8107 …) -
Flu can cause anosmia although not as prominent as for COVID19. But was anosmia that prominent symptom of 1889-90? When I read old accounts (https://twitter.com/jbloom_lab/status/1442542258515968001 …) anosmia wasn't brought up much. Mostly seen it in new reviews arguing for 1889 as OC43 w/o much primary citation.
