Do people know that the 1890 pandemic was likely caused by another coronavirus, OC43 (that was then novel?) Nowadays, no longer novel, it is one of the causes of the common cold. We're obviously not living in the OC43 pandemic since, and we won't live in a COVID pandemic forever.

This idea that oc43 popped up in the 1800s and then became a mild cold is quoted as if it is a fact. It's not. It's a wild guess, frankly. I wish we wouldn't keep repeating myths, esp in academic papers. pic.twitter.com/caVBjwM9KM

It's not a "wild guess", though it's not a generally accepted fact either. But it's well-supported by genetic evidence

I wouldn't say "well-supported". Fair to say "hypothesis" with weak support.

Stronger support than flu, so that’s why it’s the likeliest explanation imo. There is no neurotropic human influenza and 1890 caused anosmia (among other lines of evidence). Of course evidence in support of influenza could emerge. But I think “likely” is justified.

Paper 1. clocks mutation as between something broad like 1810-1920 (does a few ways with various results) then 2. "because neuro", says corona, from cows. Obviously just my opin, but I think esp. overreaching to say "mellow over time" from this article, for sure.

I would however like to see more separate discussion of two points of virus getting milder and populations having an immunity to virus, which I think get conflated too often.

Yes, have seen it, thanks. Just think evidence v. thin for suggestions (all over) that "virus will mellow". I found one report of one virus in one particular circumstance of migrating birds that was said to itself get milder (because birds had to survive the migration)...
