Why are they comparing the JNJ vax to Astra Zeneca? Yes both employ an adenovirus like vector and have similar payload. But the adverse events have been higher with Astra Zeneca and results largely unfavorable.

I’ve read data showing better results, especially long term T-cell response, from AZ. Haven’t read as closely on adverse, but those are down in decimal dust compared to benefits. 1 AZ + 1 mRNA may be even better - but all abv ignores: All are better than we expected.

Isn't the main reason that ACIP couldn't decide on this the lack of quality national data and the inability to nimbly launch a study of national importance?

There is precedent. CDC allowed the mRNA vaccines to be used interchangeably if it would delay the timing of the second dose. This is a bigger reason to 'accomodate' use of a dose of mRNA with prior receipt of J&J.

And people wonder what is causing vaccine cynicism. And we don't have any public data that I know of to figure out what vaccines those in the hospital had. We don't even have info about if say 30% of those vaccinated and hospitalized folks have cancer or other issues.
