Preparing for a talk this am and found this old slide from 2010. I've lived this this year, and it has been so incredibly enriching. Thanks to @kprather88 @jljcolorado @linseymarr @trishgreenhalgh @zeynep @DavidJDEarn @Ayjchan and so many others for all you've taught me.pic.twitter.com/YV4E2dlS3v

I think that blurring of boundaries has to happen at the level of graduate (or undergrad?) training. Once people are fully fledged, it may be too late?

But also a hierarchy in people's own minds. We had MDs (hi! not personally!) and lab/bench virologists etc. commenting on all sorts of things as experts that they were not actually experts in at all. *I* don't mind it, but only one direction is recognized as "trespassing."

Also for example: we are 18 months into a pandemic and there is no robust, real-time social science research program into vaccine hesitancy/resistance in the US. Some work from before (but it doesn't apply well as is!) but no ongoing panel study, ethnography etc.

Overall, I think many people do not understand the nature of problem(s) in front of us, or when/how it doesn't fit into the structure of silos, incentives and hierarchy in the academy/society. Can't effectively address a challenge without understanding what it is. Alas

Epidemics are complex systems. We’re not going to solve them with reductionist approaches, hierarchical mentality around disciplines, nor siloed approaches. As you said, interdisciplinary work requires trust, shared incentives, and not being an asshole.
