They’re harder to dial but easier to remember. I’d say their time has passed.
The thing is, how else do you embed memory of an important number people don't save to their contacts or need to recall frequently? It's worth teaching kids how to transliterate mnemonics into phone #s for that class of services that are important but occasional.

I agree with you, though I remember a college friend whose number was xxx-BYOB :) I probably wouldn't remember it 35 years later, otherwise!
Clearly you are young. Once upon a time all dial and touch fixed telephones and early celulars had the letters printed on the number keys. And for years these mnemonics worked great for (800) numbers. Smart phones killed all that.
