The mayor of San Fransisco at a jazz club last Thursday. The maskless partying became news because a reporter was there. Yes there is a mask mandate in SF. The issue isn’t what I think is fine. It’s that rules work if they’re workable and seen as fair.pic.twitter.com/keFyl2YbKN

Core issue isn't whether she or anyone else there was technically violating the mandate or not. (Though we do have eyes). Rules have to make sense, be seen as fair and be workable. No masks if you hold a drink in your hand for three hours isn't that.https://twitter.com/Feynman_19/status/1439979058096451585 …

She defended this by essentially claiming she was between bites of food/sips of her drink, even though she is not once seen sipping in this minute-long clip. As a person who makes a concerted effort to be sufficiently hydrated, I’m perpetually “between sips” by her standard.

Is the "being seen as fair/workable" point about the optics of the clip or the enforcement of the rule? Not masking b/w bites at restaurants seems implicitly allowed. I had assumed the same was true b/w drink sips at bars, at least as a matter of social practice. Is this not so?

IOW, what if she was in fact sipping her drink every minute or two, which I don't know? I *think* that would be consistent with the implicit rule (reflected in social practice), and such a rule seems workable--as it is in restaurants--whether or not it's good.

Of course, observing implicit but not explicit rules might be insufficient for people in positions of public authority, and the music and close quarters might have put her on the margins of the social practice. Is this the point?

I think from the story it's pretty clear that she wasn't sipping a drink every minute for hours on end. (Nor were the others). But yes, I think the mayor has a special responsibility to stay within the letter of laws she helps enact, or help alter it in a workable way for all.

Pretty sad you've subjected yourself to culture war nonsense. What a waste.

Isn't it the mayor who politicized it by not wearing one when she was- by her own rules- supposed to? No one held a gun to her head to make her go out that night.
