For a time, my feed was full of forceful (and probably correct) advocacy for "1st doses 1st." All those arguments apply with even greater force w.r.t. to boosters in rich countries vs 1st doses in LMICs, yet I'm seeing much less advocacy. Easy to imagine disheartening reasons why

This is a dumb question, but do rich countries buying more doses make it harder for LMICs to obtain vaccines? Maybe if rich countries don't buy extra doses then they never get produced? I strongly agree doses to LMICs is the priority, just not sure the best way to get them

I would also love to read more on this. My impression is that doses are still scarce and that the ability to pay more still makes a big difference – the eminent @zeynep seems to think something similar:https://twitter.com/zeynep/status/1438114414281035783?s=20 …

Disagree. We should be honest. IT IS A ZERO-SUM GAME. Vaccine manufacturers are not able to meet demand. Production is already maxed out. If we hoard or have vaccines expire rather than share, that doesn't make it a non zero-sum game, it just makes us morally bankrupt. https://twitter.com/jburnmurdoch/status/1438103141216575490 …

I think the extremely low coverage rates (<5% in many places) is another data point suggesting that doses are still a critical limiting factor. Administration challenges notwithstanding, I seriously doubt rates would be that low if doses were abundant.

Of course doses are low. The supply absolutely *is* the limiting factor in many, many places including a few wealthy places! (Though, as usual, they are making strides faster as they can purchase more of the limited supply).

Can’t imagine that there’s another reasonable way out of this extreme bottleneck besides licensing to massively increase supply
