Disagree. We should be honest. IT IS A ZERO-SUM GAME. Vaccine manufacturers are not able to meet demand. Production is already maxed out. If we hoard or have vaccines expire rather than share, that doesn't make it a non zero-sum game, it just makes us morally bankrupt.https://twitter.com/jburnmurdoch/status/1438103141216575490 …
Some vaccines (like the Chinese ones you highlight above) are indeed easier to produce, and even those above did not happen by merely opening up the technology. Also, I think of the above, only Argentina is real with localization: the rest are headlines and, so far, vaporware.

What people keep missing is that waiving patents is nice on paper, but *by itself*, it will get you headlines and not much more. We needed aggressive government-led action which included, among other things, commandeering/building capacity and mandating directed-production.

Commandeering and building capacity and mandating production requires IP waivers. I wish people opposing IP waivers would be honest about the barriers instead of using straw men.

No one claims that IP is the only barrier, that's just a straw man, but it is a key barrier. There are apparently 10 Indian companies producing the Sputnik vaccine. And mRNA vaccines, once you get it set up, are easier to produce because they are not biologics.

Just a shame that world leaders have enabled the current situation. Truly cant imagine having the power to help establish much more vaccine production and choosing pharma profit over life.
