Disagree. We should be honest. IT IS A ZERO-SUM GAME. Vaccine manufacturers are not able to meet demand. Production is already maxed out. If we hoard or have vaccines expire rather than share, that doesn't make it a non zero-sum game, it just makes us morally bankrupt.https://twitter.com/jburnmurdoch/status/1438103141216575490 …

People have a hard time accepting limits to growth. Ask any environmentalist.

Has there been any update on the candidate that was designed to be manufactured on existing influenza egg-lines?

To some extent the market is what we make it. A zero sum game can be turned into a growth game. Mandates, subsidies, liabilities, regulatory rules can all be aligned to expand the size of the market.

So, what action could be taken right now that will minimize the consequences of failing to act in the past? If I refuse a booster will that genuinely free up a dose for someone else?

Can you describe what the limiting factors are for global vaccine production and why demand can't be met?

What absolutely infuriates me is that Nate doesn't address any of the bottlenecks or real-world supply issues. He asserts infinite supply out of thin air. Or out of a sly - well, in the tbd "long term" supply should rise.Knowing full well that time is a key factor in vaccination.

Seems unbelievable that there could be no room for improvement even with government levels of funding... but even if that was the case, things still aren't zero sum (since first doses/fractional doses give a lot more benefit from the same amount of vaccine compared to boosters)

Even the glass vials used to make the vaccines are not infinite in supply - my hospital (and others) are limiting blood culture draws etc due to the medical glass shortage.

none of the IP scholars in favor of the waiver are saying it’s a magic bullet but a necessary clearance for freedom to operate incl. ramping up supply bottlenecks. We wrote about it here https://papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers.cfm?abstract_id=3851737 …

Almost 200 international IP specialists support the waiver as part of a multi pronged approach, it’s not a binaryhttps://research.kent.ac.uk/socril/ip-scholarship-trips-waiver/ …
