I suspect the actual quitting the job because of vaccine mandates will be less than the poll indicates. The unvaccinated include many people who were just hesitant or scared rather than forceful ideologues, but when asked, people like to sound like they know what they’re doing.https://twitter.com/ddiamond/status/1436087864668864520 …

How will new vaccine mandates go over? Washington Post-ABC poll conducted last week found that many unvaccinated Americans say they’ll try to get exemption or quit if their employer imposes a vaccination mandate. (H/t @sfcpoll @EmGusk) pic.twitter.com/kAkwA5kC2r

I know the social media/mass media examples tend to highlight committed, outspoken anti-vaxxers but this is where a real ethnography/reporting with better sampling would help. When looking at reporting/self-narratives, I see a lot of "I was scared, kinda waited, kinda got stuck."

Just today, I saw a tiktok from someone who, tragically, died from COVID. She says she was scared, worried vaccine wasn't yet FDA approved, and wanted to do it later, together with her family. She needed a nudge, a push and hand-holding. A mandate could have saved life her life.

Face-saving to themselves, conforming to their community/identity, face-saving to their community... Using rules to fight anxiety. I bet these are real sizable dynamics―can't tell from polling but we'll find out how big the true "strong opinion" folks are.https://twitter.com/VJGoh/status/1436097374678552582 …

I think a lot of people are waiting for mandates so they can get out of sticky personal situations and get vaccinated. Like, "gosh guys I WISH I could stay unvaccinated but I have to pay the rent. Grr, argh, government is mean anyway it's time for my appointment byeeee."

There is a weekly testing option! I'd prefer vaccination for anyone working with elderly, ill or under 12 but for most everyone covered, this essentially makes being unvaccinated a hassle—and provides cover and a face-saving path to vaccination.https://twitter.com/gosilent/status/1436104726836301824 …

I believe a minority, a small minority, will quit their job. People are inclined to go the way of least resistance and looking for a job takes way more effort than stopping by Kroger for a shot.

Anecdotally from Seattle, I've seen multiple headlines over the last week where threatened walkouts by state/city employees over vax mandates failed to materialize. The headlines made it sound like a big deal, but looks like in the end, people are going to comply.

the creation of that "stuckness" is something I would love to see you address in detail. It seems important, the social/cultural and family/interpersonal factors that create inertia and barriers around people who aren't really ideological about it, but are in a difficult context
