On a scale of 1-10, 10 being masks are intolerably awful to wear, and 1 being “I actually like it,” I’m probably around an 8 or 9. And yet I STILL truly do not understand people who have turned opposition to masks into their own personal George-Orwell-In-Catalonia Moral Struggle.

We're as much a species of talismans as one of tools, and many objects are both, obviously, especially in plague times—but we pretend we're only about the latter, that's why. You're asking why all the fuss about this one tool when the answer is that talisman conjure our passions.

Yes definitely. But some Talismans I get! This one I don’t.

MAGA wondered for 4 years why the other team didn't have a jersey, so they assigned this one.

The very weird thing is — and I know this because of my early involvement — it flipped. Example below, as late as March 17 2020, Washington Post was publishing articles saying Asians wore masks as superstition, meanwhile alt-right crowd was purchasing masks.pic.twitter.com/dEVgfG7r2O

Makes sense given prepper culture, but Trump flipped the narrative probably mostly due to vanity. Anti-Asian sentiments and anti-science movements played a role as well (CDC initially saying they weren't necessary if no symptoms).
