On a scale of 1-10, 10 being masks are intolerably awful to wear, and 1 being “I actually like it,” I’m probably around an 8 or 9. And yet I STILL truly do not understand people who have turned opposition to masks into their own personal George-Orwell-In-Catalonia Moral Struggle.

Yeah I actually thought the Busta Rhymes monologue expressed it very well!

Can't tell women they should smile more if you can't see behind that mask. Of course we are trying to control whether this option is available, it is too powerful. ;)

What do we know about the global dimensions to mask-resistance? My naive assumption is it's much higher in the US than anywhere else, but I really don't know.

A lot of European countries aren’t having younger kids mask in schools. To hear most public health officials in the US tell it, school masking is a no brainer. But from an international perspective, that doesn’t appear to actually be the consensus.

But this “visibility” cuts both ways, doesn’t it? “Being vaccinated” is more effective, error-proof, and long-lasting than “wearing a mask” — unless we all wear N95s all the time, which are even less fun than normal masks.

So why are so many jurisdictions (including Oregon right here) so heavily focused on getting everyone to WEAR MASKS, while seemingly giving up on cajoling/coercing everyone eligible to get vaccinated? I presume that the visibility of masks is a huge part of it. Pretty maddening.
