Confirmation. Dr. Lipkin had said in April 2020 he heard about the new disease in *mid-December.* (The revelation was baffling, and some thought one of the world's top virologists would be confused about dates as important as this. Anyway, no). https://www.ft.com/content/6e9b4fe7-b26e-45b9-acbd-2b24d182e914 …pic.twitter.com/5zKaN423zW

People who think this was public info/rumored by mid-December. You're all misremembering. Rumors last week of December, towards the end. ProMED email December 30/31 (timezone). And this time-shift is a huge deal given what we've been told about known cases and knowledge.

Officially, there are only five known cases, *including* retrospectively-identified ones, before December 15th. In a city of eleven million. If Chinese scientists were telling Western colleagues about a "new disease" on December 15th—as Dr. Lipkin says—that timeline doesn't work.pic.twitter.com/2VgksHuYou

Another confirmation. Folks, yes there were earlier *unknown* cases. This is different. This means that by mid-December, there are enough *known* to Chinese scientists cases that they were saying it's a *new disease* to other scientists. More virologists saying they heard about it in early December (but one apparently later saying he misremembered?). It's in Dutch—can't confirm. These are not minor details. I remember every key date in January 2020 and I followed only in personal capacity.https://twitter.com/Ayjchan/status/1432888051806638088 …

Fouchier and Koopmans said they were the first to know (1st week of Dec according to Fouchier in the interview) but Fouchier later said he was mistaken h/t @TheSeeker268 https://twitter.com/Ayjchan/status/1408839688312561672 …

Lemme try again. YES THERE WERE EARLIER CASES THAT REMAIN UNKNOWN. Stop saying that, please.😀We know that. This is a different question: when were there enough *known* cases of a new disease that Chinese scientists noticed contemporaneously—enough to alert Western colleagues.

I asked Lipkin about his comments in the doc, & if outbreak Dec 15 2019 was out of sync w what's known about earliest cases. He said: "I'm in continuous contact with colleagues in China and have a program at Sun Yet-Sen in Guangzhou." He also shared:https://thebulletin.org/2021/07/the-known-knowns-known-unknowns-and-unknown-unknowns-of-covid-19/ …

So he’s confirming what he said about the date? (He’s said that same date multiple times apparently). His colleagues in China knew of the outbreak by December 15 and informed him. WHO didn’t get notified till many weeks later and those early known cases are missing in reports.

Yes, I think his explanation is that he has close ties in China. But he didn’t answer directly when I asked if he thinks knowledge of an outbreak in mid Dec 2019 is out of sync with what was known about the earliest cases (other than pointing to his editorial, where [1/2]…
