Confirmation. Dr. Lipkin had said in April 2020 he heard about the new disease in *mid-December.* (The revelation was baffling, and some thought one of the world's top virologists would be confused about dates as important as this. Anyway, no). https://www.ft.com/content/6e9b4fe7-b26e-45b9-acbd-2b24d182e914 …pic.twitter.com/5zKaN423zW

People who think this was public info/rumored by mid-December. You're all misremembering. Rumors last week of December, towards the end. ProMED email December 30/31 (timezone). And this time-shift is a huge deal given what we've been told about known cases and knowledge.

Officially, there are only five known cases, *including* retrospectively-identified ones, before December 15th. In a city of eleven million. If Chinese scientists were telling Western colleagues about a "new disease" on December 15th—as Dr. Lipkin says—that timeline doesn't work.pic.twitter.com/2VgksHuYou

Another confirmation. Folks, yes there were earlier *unknown* cases. This is different. This means that by mid-December, there are enough *known* to Chinese scientists cases that they were saying it's a *new disease* to other scientists. More virologists saying they heard about it in early December (but one apparently later saying he misremembered?). It's in Dutch—can't confirm. These are not minor details. I remember every key date in January 2020 and I followed only in personal capacity.https://twitter.com/Ayjchan/status/1432888051806638088 …

Lemme try again. YES THERE WERE EARLIER CASES THAT REMAIN UNKNOWN. Stop saying that, please.😀We know that. This is a different question: when were there enough *known* cases of a new disease that Chinese scientists noticed contemporaneously—enough to alert Western colleagues.

shortly after Dec. 5th, says Fouchier, several dozen with unclear pneumonia symptoms. Unclear at very first if it's a toxin or a virus, but quickly apparent it's virus, and it's not bird flu. Sources for them are social media, Koopmans mentions a newspaper (not specified).

I'll say that I know where YOU are going with this, find it important/necessary for timeline record. But where OTHERS are going w this, in major chatter/engagement, is beyond the scope. That's not your responsibility, but why you're getting some exasperated (misplaced) pushback.

Having this big a contradiction in the official timeline/known cases and not have any serious reporting on it (apparently Lipkin and others have been saying this for a year?) is what feeds more speculation, imo. "Let's not talk about it" is a worse option.

There were videos in IG of people in Wuhan dying and/or passing out in the middle of streets from covid symptoms in mid-Dec '19. The captions were basically "we're dying and the government isn't doing anything about it"

George Gao said he found out about Covid on social media on December 30. Wouldn't he have heard about it earlier if Chinese scientists were telling western counterparts?

One would hope/think so, no? For what it's worth, I would believe that Chinese scientists and doctors would notice this early: they have the SARS experience and the expertise.
