Confirmation. Dr. Lipkin had said in April 2020 he heard about the new disease in *mid-December.* (The revelation was baffling, and some thought one of the world's top virologists would be confused about dates as important as this. Anyway, no). https://www.ft.com/content/6e9b4fe7-b26e-45b9-acbd-2b24d182e914 …pic.twitter.com/5zKaN423zW

People who think this was public info/rumored by mid-December. You're all misremembering. Rumors last week of December, towards the end. ProMED email December 30/31 (timezone). And this time-shift is a huge deal given what we've been told about known cases and knowledge.

Officially, there are only five known cases, *including* retrospectively-identified ones, before December 15th. In a city of eleven million. If Chinese scientists were telling Western colleagues about a "new disease" on December 15th—as Dr. Lipkin says—that timeline doesn't work.pic.twitter.com/2VgksHuYou

Another confirmation. Folks, yes there were earlier *unknown* cases. This is different. This means that by mid-December, there are enough *known* to Chinese scientists cases that they were saying it's a *new disease* to other scientists. More virologists saying they heard about it in early December (but one apparently later saying he misremembered?). It's in Dutch—can't confirm. These are not minor details. I remember every key date in January 2020 and I followed only in personal capacity.https://twitter.com/Ayjchan/status/1432888051806638088 …

Lemme try again. YES THERE WERE EARLIER CASES THAT REMAIN UNKNOWN. Stop saying that, please.😀We know that. This is a different question: when were there enough *known* cases of a new disease that Chinese scientists noticed contemporaneously—enough to alert Western colleagues.

yep, anything earlier than like the 27th (a few days prior to the @ProMED_mail email) would be a very odd time to know about that, all we had to go off were uncertain *really vague* rumours.

Yeah, so many people are like "didn't everyone know about this by then?" lol no. At a minimum, this means that the WHO report is missing a whoooole bunch of known early cases, and the timeline of when cases emerged and when things were known inside China is completely different.

"last week of December, towards the end"sounds right to me(news addict),but I get my sources from'Western'media. If rumours were circulating on twitter in the last week of December,it's plausible that on Eastern media they might have been available earlier.https://twitter.com/noawitheringly/status/1433057535582523394?s=20 …

This is just anecdotal, but I have personal written records (messages to friends) of being upset by pics allegedly from China circulated on twitter in the last week of 12/2019 depicting people on hospital floors, body bags for babies &unexplained smoke columns from city buildings.

I am asia-based with colleagues in shanghai. I distinctly remember discussions colleagues there pre Xmas 2019 about avoiding a trip to wuhan, given reports of atypical pneumonia there. They were half joking / half serious. Reminded me of similar reports in nov 2002 in s china

I got a seizure on valentines. Even though it had nothing to do with they gave me a pneumonia shot. I told them I already had it in the past. They gave it anyway. I think they had the knowledge about what was going on.
