New Spike Lee documentary about the pandemic opens with Ian Lipkin—Columbia virologist—saying he first heard about the outbreak on *December 15th*. Watched it three times to make sure I heard it right. Lee asks and Lipkin repeats the date. This is a big deal, no? December 15???pic.twitter.com/nE355EALac

He's said this before to the press (albeit in less precise terms). No one seems to have been very interested. Through its scientific community, the US is sitting on a treasure trove of information.https://www.ft.com/content/6e9b4fe7-b26e-45b9-acbd-2b24d182e914 …

Hah. Seems said it before. The lack if curiosity in the press has been baffling. Even before this, the reported dates and cases in papers just do not add up.

Completely baffling. There's generally little work on the US side of scientific cooperation on these issues ; (a lot of it being crude rightwing finger pointing). On the topic of origins for instance:https://twitter.com/R_H_Ebright/status/1432867712158498818?s=20 …

Many threads of investigation are available in the US and would be accessible to a Congressional inquiry with subpoena power. At EcoHealth. At funding agencies (USAID, DTRA, DARPA, DHS, and NIH). At publishers (Springer-Nature and Lancet). No cooperation from China needed.

I remember pretty much every date of significance in January of 2020 despite only following in personal capacity. When the Thailand case emerged etc. I would remember all dates in December if this had been my life’s work. Not likely to be off by weeks.

The only slightly comparable testimony from outside of China that I’ve come across is that of then French Health Minister Agnes Buzyn, but it seems less reliable and precise than Lipkin’s clearly stated mid-December contact.https://twitter.com/Francis_Aln/status/1333697202473078785 …

The French health minister (who resigned in Feb) said that she warned the president on 20 or 25 December (she said both, unclear) after reading "an English-language disease surveillance blog" and told the French ambassador in Beijing who spoke to Chinese authorities in December.

I think it's important to look into further. But this is probably the most common type of memory flaw we have, even for flashbulb memory--remembering something very clearly, but earnestly believing some factually wrong details, such as a date. Still worth looking into ofc
