New Spike Lee documentary about the pandemic opens with Ian Lipkin—Columbia virologist—saying he first heard about the outbreak on *December 15th*. Watched it three times to make sure I heard it right. Lee asks and Lipkin repeats the date. This is a big deal, no? December 15???pic.twitter.com/nE355EALac

There were American doctors visiting the Wuhan hospital, by chance, in mid-December, and they were aware of an outbreak of uncharacterized pneumonia at the time. This is known in certain communities.

Why isn’t it reported on? This completely contradicts every timeline we’re told. These “certain communities” should please please speak up, no? December 15 as known date for an uncharacterized pneumonia *outbreak* is a huge deal.

“Outbreak” is too strong. A set of hospitalized patients. I was aware of the situation by January 15, 2020, or so, so it’s hardly surprising that others, more in the know, had even earlier awareness.

“Outbreak” can be used to mean “more cases than expected.” A small number of uncharacterized pneumonia cases can be described as an outbreak.

You think there were enough known to Chinese scientists by December 15th that they were aware and telling others of their concern? Wuhan is a city of eleven million. This is absolutely different than everything we’ve ever been told.

I’m not equipped to evaluate the accuracy of the claim. Just suggesting he may be claiming to have known about a small number of cases, not a large number of cases.

fascinating. I have no reason to question the cred of Ian Lipkin, but this is a Spike Lee doc- he recently included 9/11 'truthers' in a documentary. Someone should follow up with Lipkin for further explanation, not just extrapolate from this one quote

It's well-known that cluster of "mystery" pneumonia cases was in Wuhan hospitals by mid-Dec 2019. Samples from these patients were sent to local genomic research labs for assay, and 2 had ID a SARS CoV on Dec. 26 & 27. This is well documented; many sources. Why RU surprised?
