Vaccine nationalism is truly horrid.

It’s extremely tough to self-isolate in Vietnam too. Most people live in shared, congregate settings.

Vaccine nationalism is unfortunate, but I hope folks do not feel guilty about getting a third dose.

Folks should feel guilty

This is analogous to a scenario in which you feel for the plight of your neighbors but your own kids are throwing a tantrum at home because they are not getting their way… you do whatever you can to help thy neighbors but you still need to avoid your house getting trashed

My intuition is that individual Americans who refuse a third dose are not actually helping Vietnamese get vaccines (ie, it's equivalent to "finish your dinner, there are starving kids in Africa"). But do we know if the US doing 3rd shots is diverting from 1st/2nd shots elsewhere?

It is if supplies are limited. In the short term, they are, but also in the short term, contracts signed & logistics issues are also barriers. What we need is much less than a war mobilization-level effort to multiply production, vaccinate the world & crush this virus in humans.

Had everybody done what Vietnam did, we would not even have a Delta variant now, and everything wold be much easier.

This is the truth, but sadly it's something that many people in America haven't absorbed as we trudge through the second year of the pandemic.
