About 1.6 million Israelis have received booster shots. There’s been a flattening of the curves for severe illness and hospitalizations. Awaiting further follow-up and full analysis but this early look is encouraging.https://twitter.com/segal_eran/status/1430068336109441034 …

So frustrating that such important conversations depend on people trying to eyeball charts of data that are important but also confounded—regardless of one's sense of necessity or effect size of boosters for healthier/younger folks, this is a recipe for confusion for the public.

It would be helpful if the Israelis could release their full dataset. We're roughly 2-3m behind US and Israel in Canada and we need this data to inform our own booster-dose policy.

What happened to trials? Where on earth are the many many trials we should have had on such questions. I'm so baffled and frustrated. We should have had a booster trial starting with the elderly probably around May, no? (Six month mark?)

No one is ever thinking proactively. Trials in kids should have happened sooner, now we're stuck as schools restart. We should have been testing a reformulated vaccine by now, maybe even a universal one. All we have now is the same vaccine that's less and less effective.

💯 this. Even the straight resource allocation to PH and HC system. Any epidemiologist worth their name would've told decision makers that pandemics last years (i.e. longer than a few weeks) so making "medium term" resource shifts (hire more nurses!! More labs, etc!) makes sense.

From immunological perspective the data at 6 month point appeared to be sufficient for protection-far into future-this was pre-delta variant. It seems mRNA vaccine immune memory was a bit shorter lived in elderly than would have been predicted & coincided with delta unfortunately

An ongoing, adaptive trial would have caught both early, would be ethical, and allow us to proceed in a manner for all that inspired confidence.

So easy to make statements like this after the fact. Delta wasn’t a factor in May. The main goal of the vaccine is prevention of *severe* disease and that’s holding up quite well.
