It's been a genuine honor to write for the Atlantic for years, but especially during the pandemic. I cannot say enough about what an amazing crew they are. As amazing as the new position is, that part is genuinely bittersweet for me. Hard to overstate my respect for them.

What else? I will pull back from regular newsletters for now. (Newsletter about that coming soon). My substack will soon turn into a free newsletter for a future book—details soon. It's been a very hectic eighteen months, and I want to try to focus on the big lessons a bit, too.

I am going to remain an academic! This year, I'm at Columbia University but I remain affiliated with the University of North Carolina as well. I've had the most amazing fortune in my academic career. Plus, I greatly value the independence and grounding being an academic provides.

The only thing I can promise is that I will keep writing what I think, to the best of my ability, as honestly as I can. That freedom is an incredible privilege and a responsibility, and it's why I chose the career path that I did. So here we are.

To folks asking: no I haven't yet finalized the book title/publisher but am working on it. Hopefully soon. I'm hoping to try to use the pandemic experience, but to talk about broader themes about society, institutions and knowledge.
