So I finally watched The Chair. Obviously, there are a lot of department/setting specific parts (English department seemingly in a liberal arts college) that may not resonate with everyone in academia. But the department copier had no code? Come on.

Also the idea that being a department chair is uniformly seen as a promotion? I know lots of people outside of academia believe this... And maybe there are places like that but.. Okay, maybe we shouldn't talk about it.

My department chair would show up in my office so very often her first year as chair, in tears. Now, after 7 years, it's only once in a while. I'm not even tenured faculty but Ive been here longer than everyone else. It's a very challenging position.

These days it's the absolute worst! The good people stuck in that position are just trying desperately to stem the tide of horribleness as a personal sacrifice.
