So I finally watched The Chair. Obviously, there are a lot of department/setting specific parts (English department seemingly in a liberal arts college) that may not resonate with everyone in academia. But the department copier had no code? Come on.

Also The Chair was missing the well-meaning relative saying: “I think you should get a job in <insert location closer to relative>. I know [chair or professor in unrelated department | administrative person at provost’s office] who can put in a good word for you.” Crucial cliche!

I once had to introduce a professor at a conference, and referred to her by saying, among other accolades, "In 2014, she was given a five year sentence as department chair."

The way I phrase it is that my sins have never been grievous enough for me to be a department chair. Alternatively, I just quote Gen. Sherman: If nominated, I will not run; if elected, I will not serve. Fortunately, my colleagues know better than to dare me.

You know I met your chair?

Paraphrasing an academic mentor: "Every year in the department, there's a power struggle. And the loser becomes the department chair."
