Yes, that's exactly what I am saying, because there is no possibility of making judgements in context of a pandemic that just killed nearly 700k Americans that might be different in any way from judgments made in any other year.

Megan, the problem is your judgments have no limiting principle, and we truly fear that, if left to people like you, this would be the reality forever. Covid is not going away. Variants are not going to stop developing. When do kids get faces back?

Again, I'm not actually arguing for or against masking in schools--but "when thousands of people aren't dying every day" is a pretty well-defined limiting principle, just not the one you happen to like.

What if seasonal waves of covid deaths are simply a reality of life just like flu deaths? Welcome to the human virome. That’s not the limiting principle you think it is. Again, covid is going to be here forever.

If seasonal waves of covid deaths like this are the new reality, conservatives are deluding themselves that we are ever going to get back to 2019 normal, and should start planning accordingly, rather than trying to browbeat folks into acting like nothing's changed.

Or we could just emigrate to countries that haven’t done the NPIs we hate and so those societies don’t remain perpetually psychologically invested in the fear of not doing them?

There’s no evidence at all that vaxxed adults are better transmitters of the virus than unvaxxed kids. School outbreaks played a major role in the big surges in both the UK and Israel. That’s not evidence masks help. But transmission among kids is not a fiction.

How does one account for the nations where schools did not mask or experience major outbreaks from kid-adult transmission at schools?

I think we need to wait until the fall to see if that’s true with Delta widely seated in communities. I don’t think kids are going to be primary vectors of transmission, and are still mainly going to get it from adults. But kid-to-kid transmission is plainly a thing.

Based on anectode piles (not traditional statistics, but are a form of sampling so I it means something), I think unvaxxed kids will spread a lot more than before. FWIW, I sent my own kid to in-person school when available and learning pod before that for all of last year.

I think the dilemma for people with kids under 12 is real, and I think it was an easier decision last year. Upside, parents can be vaccinated now. I think we cannot extrapolate too well from last year. And yeah it sucks for the kids, third school-year for some.

It is only a dilemma for the innumerate. Even if Delta is four times as deadly for 0-11 as other variants (it isn't) the risks are comparable to the flu for that age group.

Am willing to lay a bet now that masking kids under 12 in 2021-2022 will turn out to be at least 50x less effective at any measure of control than vaccinating more people.
