I’m not sure what was meant exactly but the vibe is clearly “why are we handing out shots when it would be better for morale to shut down indoor activities during the fall and maybe winter” which is a pretty crap vibe if you ask me
I don't know what was meant either, but the booster plan as presented today, had it been under Trump, would have caused a huge and well-deserved outcry. US is going to offer a third Moderna shot in September to a healthy, immunocompetent 18-year old why?
an 18 yo won’t be eligible for a shot in September bc teens weren’t getting shots in January on the broader booster q, I’m flummoxed by the lack of data but tipping toward concern for early-vax’d seniors Still, the “all Americans” booster rule caught me by great surprise
Those in healthcare will be. But it also doesn't make sense for 30-year-old people. Immunocompromised, elderly, J&J recipients (who are still ignored), high-risk, fine. This is "something must be done" stage of pandemic policy.
We’re in strong agreement on the weirdness of non-senior immunocompetent boosters. I haven’t seen any good cost-benefit case for them. Above I’m mostly reacting to the inference that rather than focus on vaccines we should just close all indoor restaurants indefinitely.
Yeah, that's neither here or there. I couldn't make sense of that part.

Derek Thompson added,
Today's MMWR. Lower efficacy against infection (which is real) almost entirely driven by the young. (How many are J&J only? Dunno). Definitely more illnesses, we see it around us. But no lowering of efficacy from 95% for hospitalization in any age group. https://www.cdc.gov/mmwr/volumes/70/wr/mm7034e1.htm?s_cid=mm7034e1_w …pic.twitter.com/ncXkdjtRKl
I think Delta is terrible, likely more severe, clearly very very transmissible. Where did we get from that to boosters for all this Fall by press release?
I'm trying to understand the science around Delta: Is the risk ratio of outdoors vs. indoors the same, or has Delta changed it?
