Only the military side of the Kabul airport has been secured, leaving ordinary civilians with no flights or a functioning airport. The women’s rights leaders who’ll be hunted by the Taliban had no chance. But no worries, the evacuation of dogs is proceeding in an orderly manner.https://twitter.com/ABC/status/1427206247338622980 …

This also happened in Kabul. People clung to an evacuation plane — these are carrying embassy staff —and fell to their deaths. The video should be distressing, though many won’t care it seems.https://twitter.com/euronews/status/1427236717183045642 …

People immediately rushing to remind me dogs are valuable too or we had to leave—who said otherwise. But as those heartless, callous commenters remind me, it’s a hierarchy in which people or Afghanistan don’t even get crocodile tears. They’re, at best, props for domestic policy.

People can at least pretend to accept Afghans as human beings, their suffering as real and mumble some thoughts and prayers? The bar for pretend humanity isn’t high. We know what’s happening and what was inevitable and blah blah blah. Just one crocodile tear, please. It’ll do.https://twitter.com/zeynep/status/1427274293642244106 …

I just can’t handle people who can’t even manage crocodile tears, especially for the women but also for all the people who worked for us and we didn’t bother evacuating in time. Just have the decency to pretend to care, mumble some perfunctory thoughts and prayers.

Current scenes in Kabul are just made for Twitter: very dramatic, utterly tragic, there's nothing any of us can do, so the Twitter hucksters resort to settling their favoured political scores... because it's great for the Twitter engagement. https://twitter.com/yanisvaroufakis/status/1427012544523296774 …

All of this could have been managed. Leave or not but this utter lack of foresight and planning is absolutely appalling.

There was meticulous planning. It all went out the window when the Afghan army folded and the government literally bugged out.

It's heartless, callous, and disingenuous to compare the evacuation of dogs to rescuing people left behind in Afghanistan. It invites dishonest, disturbing comparisons. So, great - let's leave the dogs behind and now ... what? We can save the women at risk? It's 1:1, right?

Some dog handlers won't leave their dogs. It might have been the better choice compared to dragging handlers onto the plane.

Dogs are valuable, but aren’t military working dogs ultimately subservient to the mission? If the mission becomes: Mass rescue, wouldn’t it be considered acceptable to sacrifice military working dogs in the name of that mission?
