There is no good way to withdraw from Afghanistan. Anyone dunking on Joe Biden for doing the right thing should be rightfully and proudly ignored.

Is it realistic to expect imperial bureaucracies to somehow become super competent?

Yes. We have a giant military that is very very competent in logistics with massive amounts of hardware. These people have been known to us for years. We employed them. Evacuating them to safety should have been a minimal requirement. The bureaucracy can be sorted out later.
