I went on media and mentioned something that's no surprise to any healthcare worker: some people are just really afraid of needles. They don't always admit it in polls, but they are there. But with some support, they can get vaccinated. Since then, I've been getting emails.https://twitter.com/shellen/status/1425592972138094593 …

      zeynep tufekci added,

I see so many people around me spending mental energy getting mad at individuals like the one in the first story above, and these same angry people are also convinced that there is nothing to be done but to get mad at them and despair.

Meanwhile, in reality, there are a substantial number of people who remain unvaccinated who could be convinced or pressured (via mandates). Not all of them are dislikeable, misinformation-spouting die-hard anti-vaxxers with strong ideological agendas. Many of their reasons range trivial to historically-rooted to personally idiosyncratic, but more importantly most of those are addressable with some effort.

A new, hopeful take on the road ahead in fighting COVID. Thank you @zeynep for this post and for saving countless lives by questioning the guidance to “not wear” masks in early 2020. https://www.theinsight.org/p/the-lure-of-the-caricature … pic.twitter.com/2orbzaeum6

I've been hearing stories of people who aren't vaccinated simply because of fear of needles —yes, they *know* the rational arguments—and also stories of people whose loved ones helped them get it done: take them there, hold their hand, anti-anxiety meds, breathe-in, breathe-out.

Agree. I've long been for mandates for anyone working with vulnerable populations (elderly, children, immunocompromised, hospitalized) but I think more push along with more support has more room to go than we imagine.https://twitter.com/Ignoroptimist/status/1425968731738361857 …

I'd like you to introduce you to this weird species that you seem a bit unfamiliar with. I've no doubt that there's a non-trivial number of people who are very afraid of ventilators, but are also frozen with fear of needles. Phobias are human and common.https://twitter.com/towittertoo/status/1425969221163495425 …

A reminder not just to media (of this known problem that should have been taken more seriously) but also just general awareness: some people in your life are just afraid of needles and may not be telling you, but might be able to manage it with support.https://twitter.com/Rschooley/status/1425969788283604996 …

Yes, good point. I have a dentist and a dentist-phobic person in my family, and the former has so many stories and I have so many stories of the latter going to extreme lengths to avoid the simplest visit. Dentists are pros at this. And we see patients more regularly than anyone. Let us administer at routine checkups.

To "get over it" people. I'm not afraid of needles, and maybe you aren't either. But having irrational fears, knowing they're irrational, being embarrassed about it, and avoiding even life-saving interventions because of such fears... it's human. None of us are pure rationality.

Ah, this is great: a special section of the clinic. Also, folks, the person featured here is is a neuroscientist and molecular biologist. She was frozen with fear, and breaking down crying repeatedly. It took a special clinic, therapy, personal support. https://twitter.com/piptal/status/1425975710552838145 …pic.twitter.com/3pujv6pcYr

Indeed. But this is the United States. IIRC, a third of the population has no primary-care provider, and who's going to do this with a high deductible plan? Low-anxiety sections or pop-up clinics might help.https://twitter.com/keithmann/status/1425976768004075527 …

I'd hope that anyone feeling that way could go to their doctor, get a nice comfy place to lay down, a couple of Valium, and get 'er done. No stigma. Advertise the service for those who feel they need it.

Needle phobia is special. Some people really do have a physical reaction that causes them to faint at the sight of them, that I don't think is psychological at all.https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/vasovagal-syncope/symptoms-causes/syc-20350527 …

I have this. I need to sit around for 10 minutes after getting a flu shot, or I’ll faint when I stand up. My face got closely acquainted with a door knob at a doctor’s office where they didn’t take me seriously

I had a panic attack when I got my first shot at the Vancouver Convention Centre. The nurse was so nice, they have a section closed off where they will give you the shot privately. My sister also has a phobia of needles and she got hers in SK where they also took her aside.

I didn't have a panic attack over the needle, but the large number of people at the vaccine center 😱, after sheltering at home all year. Still got the first shot, but went to my doctor and got some Zoloft. Second shot somewhat easier.
