The CDC has a tough job, but it can do better by following its own recommendation that public health authorities "𝗯𝗲 𝗳𝗶𝗿𝘀𝘁, 𝗯𝗲 𝗿𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗯𝗲 𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗱𝗶𝗯𝗹𝗲", and avoid releasing information late & mixed messages from multiple experts. https://www.nytimes.com/2021/08/04/opinion/cdc-covid-guidelines.html … https://twitter.com/PaulSaxMD/status/1422907717556056067 …pic.twitter.com/QWfh2drA0d

As I note in the piece, the CDC has such a difficult job right now, and many things aren't under its control. Still, we should say it can to do better: react early, forcefully and with a unified voice to brewing crises like Delta. We had data leak in dribs and drabs...

On media coverage, especially on the Delta vaccinated/unvaccinated transmission that administration officials were upset with: Honestly, I agree with them that some coverage was pretty misleading—but it's *their* job to leave less space for that by being super clear and forceful.

FWIW, my piece from May on indoor mask guidance change: I wrote it was too soon and it was unrealistic to expect the unvaccinated to keep masking, and we should tie lifting mandates to benchmarks to protect the immunocompromised & the not-yet-vaccinated. .https://www.nytimes.com/2021/05/14/opinion/coronavirus-masks-vaccines.html …

The print version has Rodin’s Thinker, with a mask at hand. 😀 I hope he’s also pondering a full FDA approval for vaccines now, expanding mandates, a strong push to reach more people, increasing mAb use, and urgent attention to school openings—masks, ventilation and rapid tests.pic.twitter.com/TcZQkvq5Ha

How CDC handled this pandemic will be very good "Do & Don't" lesson for future public communications.

Where exactly is this mathematical predictive data that proves a brewing crisis? Where??

And Delta wouldn't be an issue if people had vaccinated, which reasonably, the CDC couldn't imagine people not vaccinating to save their lives.

Or, people could use "common sense." Wearing a mask does NOT put the wearer at risk. Social distancing does NOT put the social distancer at risk. If you're not sure what to do, err on the side of safety. Do we really need the CDC to sort that out for us?

You can still get infected if you're vaccinated. You can still infect others if you're vaccinated. Should you wear a mask and social distance, even if you're vaccinated? If you do wear a mask, and social distance, but "don't need to," what have you lost?

Why does the CDC act this way? Overstating the clinical data on breakthrough is clearly a bad idea. Is it that they cannot admit they were wrong in may? Or do they not consider "sociological effects of guidance" as "data", too.
