Provincetown was a worse case scenario from what I can tell—week of overcrowded, indoors and close-contact— and also really unlucky (remember how one South Korean infected maybe 5000+ in 2020?). But many were vaccinated. Result: it’s over. No deaths. Very very few severe illness.https://twitter.com/ashishkjha/status/1421183212290813954 …

I know I sound like a broken record But here's the thing The vaccines are largely working as expected We had an outbreak in P-town with lots of vaccinated folks infected No one died. Very few got sick And things have returned to normal This is how vaccines work folks https://twitter.com/AlexBMorse/status/1421139894257266691 …

Yes. It’s clearly one of the worst-case scenarios we’ve encountered. And it showed how well the vaccines work. That’s why it’s so useful as long as we put it in the correct context.https://twitter.com/EldrichMatt/status/1421467815752736774 …

That's kind of the point. Provincetown is so atypical that it is your worst case scenario.

How this got twisted into bad news is amazing. And it’s difficult to amaze me at this point

It sounds like the vaccine did its job preventing severe disease but is there anything new can we learn about transmission from vaccinated people?

There's a lot of good data to be gleaned from the outbreak regarding immunocompromised individuals in particular. That was my big take away from what has been released

The Delta variant is bad, but the Anti-vax variant will be worse.

This is the line my fellow vaccinated friends are taking in Alabama to refuse putting masks on themselves or their kids as we surge. The vaccine prevented deaths--we knew that--but it's not preventing transmission the way we thought. It's time to be honest about that. For kids.

Except it is preventing transmission. Based on the estimated Ro of Delta, you would have expected about 5x as many cases to arise from the outbreak as what did

Were there deaths among unvaccinated caught up in the outbreak?

Not that any have been reported so far, but most were vaccinated anyway—and vaccination rates are especially high among the elderly. So the vulnerable “target” was much reduced.
