I read once that older NYC apartment buildings were designed to be overheated so that people kept windows open during the winter. Now we just complain about how hot they are.

I’ve always been a little skeptical of that claim…it’s from Dan Holohan’s book and nowhere else, and it doesn’t totally line up with the timeline for steam radiator introduction

I think it’s a “just so” story and the truth about overheating in NYC apartments is windows have gotten better, steam tenement heat is very uneven, and tenement house reform was concerned about airflow but did not cause landlords to voluntarily intentionally overspend on fuel
