Part of what's striking to me is

Also may be why it’s solo-authored. Risk only to him. But the more scientists do this work, the saner and more empirical a discussion. Attempts to portray all questions—including obviously legitimate ones—as racism, anti-science, baseless conspiracies etc. backfired—as expected.
