Obviously true. Most scientists in authoritarian settings are just unfree, not unscientist. But there *also* are scientists wrapped up with the regime—as everywhere— so the assumption orders are just crude and from stupid bureaucrats is also not warranted.https://twitter.com/wanderer_jasnah/status/1407495160502620160 …

One of the biggest misunderstanding about enduring authoritarian regimes is that the people in charge are uniformly stupid and crude, no smart/educated person advising them/is one of them. Obviously, this wouldn't work for long. But also: their regular people are regular people!

Deletion aside:
@Jbloom_lab paper strongly suggests the Huanan seafood market wasn't the origin location. Brings me to something I wrote this week: the recent WHO report excluded cases earlier than seafood market outbreak in a way I can't make sense of. https://www.theinsight.org/p/bring-back-the-weekly-newspaper …pic.twitter.com/rQx4nAndKs

Jan 2020 Lancet paper by Chinese scientists has three cases *earlier* than the market outbreak, says all confirmed by RT-PCR. A year later, WHO excludes three early December cases based clinical findings like "responded to antibiotics." What about those PCR confirmations?pic.twitter.com/SX436JPCNd

Replying to @zeynep
Maybe I am missing something, but isn't it possible the three excluded cases were part of the "59 initially suspected cases" and not a subset of the 41 confirmed cases by PCR?

Then where are they in the WHO report? There were multiple cases all *PCR-confirmed*, as per Lancet article, before the first-known seafood market linked case. Now they aren’t included. We then have WHO report talking about clinically excluded cases. I couldn’t make sense of it.
