Obviously true. Most scientists in authoritarian settings are just unfree, not unscientist. But there *also* are scientists wrapped up with the regime—as everywhere— so the assumption orders are just crude and from stupid bureaucrats is also not warranted.https://twitter.com/wanderer_jasnah/status/1407495160502620160 …

One of the biggest misunderstanding about enduring authoritarian regimes is that the people in charge are uniformly stupid and crude, no smart/educated person advising them/is one of them. Obviously, this wouldn't work for long. But also: their regular people are regular people!

Deletion aside:
@Jbloom_lab paper strongly suggests the Huanan seafood market wasn't the origin location. Brings me to something I wrote this week: the recent WHO report excluded cases earlier than seafood market outbreak in a way I can't make sense of. https://www.theinsight.org/p/bring-back-the-weekly-newspaper …pic.twitter.com/rQx4nAndKs

Jan 2020 Lancet paper by Chinese scientists has three cases *earlier* than the market outbreak, says all confirmed by RT-PCR. A year later, WHO excludes three early December cases based clinical findings like "responded to antibiotics." What about those PCR confirmations?pic.twitter.com/SX436JPCNd

Also, interesting week to have written this in my newsletter. The seafood market as an amplifying event (first big outbreak) with virus circulation earlier in Wuhan has always been possible from what data we did have (even with the Lancet/WHO confusion). https://www.theinsight.org/p/bring-back-the-weekly-newspaper …pic.twitter.com/XKQjlIKgVQ

And this is how it would unfold, next, in some parts of the world... (Sorry, sorry, gallows humor. Middle Eastern thing).https://twitter.com/zeynep/status/1407535307755511808 …

zeynep tufekciVerified account @zeynepReplying to @zeynep @Fullyfallible and 2 othersIf it were the Middle East, or Belarus, I guess, a slightly disheveled bat would soon appear on TV, with a *very* sincere confession—that it is in no way reading off the teleprompter. Just decided to come clean on that recombination, guilty conscience. Only wishes to apologize!5 replies 4 retweets 89 likesShow this thread -

Thought the third agency was meant to be the Mukhabarat (variously Syrian, Egyptian, depending on the place in which it is told).
