There's also this. As a population gets vaccinated, the denominator is changing. https://twitter.com/dylanhmorris/status/1393249536932339717 …

Exponentials, conditional probabilities and shifting denominators are kinda counterintuitive to grasp, but but epidemics and vaccination campaigns through an ongoing epidemic really need all three to wrap one's mind around where we are.

Still, delta is the worst we've seen. If you notice my other thread. I'm still unable to find a way to disbelieve the numbers that are now coming out of India, as per excess deaths. Both transmissibility and severity look much higher. But the great threat is to the unvaccinated.

Also true. I hope Delta is all over the place already in the United States—it would mean we have less room to have worse things happen. (Unvaccinated regions/people remain at risk, and they will face a more severe disease).https://twitter.com/CohoKelly/status/1404299012098998275 …

This is a good point, and this is also why the stat "29% of Delta deaths in the UK were vaccinated" is impossible to interpret on its own. If 100% of people were vaxxed, 100% of deaths would be of vaxxed as well.

Can’t be said often enough. Needs to get into mainstream media too

Yes and in these populations the vaccinated greatly (finally) outnumber the unvaccinated. Raw numbers also very low.

What’s also interesting about vaccination patterns is that the US has vaccinated many times the number of ppl under 35 that the UK has. This cohort seems to be driving infection spread in the UK…I think the difference will be meaningful in what we experience in the US w/ delta.
-
Although your vulnerable cohort has lower uptake so when it does reach them it will hit harder. Agree we may have unwittingly taken a strategy that didn’t suppress transmission enough though.
