I don't know how to wrap my head around this. As @covidserology puts it, it would mean ~2000 deaths per million in a rural state with a median age of 23, in JUST TWO MONTHS. About 170,000 excess deaths, over two months. Even if not all from COVID, this is a catastrophic picture.https://twitter.com/Rukmini/status/1403563967172153344 …

Officially, Madhya Pradesh reported just 4,461 Covid deaths between January 1 and May 31 2021. The excess deaths seen in the same period are over 42 times the reported Covid death toll, though the entire excess death toll is not attributable to Covid. pic.twitter.com/Mmgj7LYya6

I don't understand the number, honestly. This is the population pyramid for Madhya Pradesh. That many excess deaths in just two months is hard to make sense of. I hope we eventually learn what happened. (I am not making any claims; I don't understand it).pic.twitter.com/vKzSdHtH8E

Looking at this, it doesn't seem plausible that they just have haphazard statistics. Every other year/month aligns. Again, a rural state (less than third live in cities) and median age is around 23. High R *and* more severity *and* little/no medical care?https://twitter.com/Rukmini/status/1403562991610519557 …

I wrote about it for @scroll_in here: https://scroll.in/article/996772/madhya-pradesh-saw-nearly-three-times-more-deaths-than-normal-after-second-wave-of-covid-19-struck … This chart is all-cause mortality (Civil Registration Data) for every month since January 2018, and you don't need me to point out that May 2021 was record-breaking, and horrifying pic.twitter.com/uM7JjDQ7YS

Why wouldn't all be from Covid? In many countries, it seems the number of Covid deaths is *greater* than the number of excess deaths (because deaths from other causes have gone down due to lockdown/social distancing).

At least during the 1st wave in the US hospitals were empty for awhile because no-one wanted to go to a hospital even in places covid had reached much yet. That led to a lot of heart attacks and strokes that werent disgnosed and cancers that werent diagnosed early enough etc...

Indeed, including Madhya Pradesh #ExcessMortality data, and 7 other states, appears 2 million people have died of Covid in India-more than any other country. https://www.researchgate.net/publication/352354558_Preliminary_Analysis_of_Excess_Mortality_Suggests_That_2_Million_People_May_Have_Perished_in_Relation_to_the_Covid-19_Pandemic_in_India_More_Than_in_Any_Other_Country …

I'm just lost here, the implied CFR, especially given the population/age pyramid of the state, is mind-boggling. Or what happened? I don't know. Yes, I expect India to have lost the most people to this pandemic when all is said and done—just like 1918.

Like NYC numbers last spring (around 8 million people times 2000 deaths = 16,000 deaths in two months). It is catastrophic.

What has happened to world food prices since the pandemic and lockdowns started? In December 2019 the index was at 101. In May 2021 at 125. That's a ~25% increase in food prices. Think of how many people will have gone hungry or starved as a result. https://clubtroppo.com.au/2021/05/19/peace-food-prices-hunger-deaths-and-inequality/ … pic.twitter.com/0OH6qphwzG

No, not possibly relevant in just two months.
