I have a friend, you guess gender and race. The field has a job market rumor site, to figure out how to applications are doing and what’s going on. There’s a bunch of people there who post degrading stuff about her, day in day out, for years. I think it’s beyond your imagination.
The blue check doesn’t prevent the most committed, but absolutely helps add a status marker to people who are otherwise starting miles behind others are, by default. It influences journalists. Who gets quoted. Who’s ignored. Of course it matters.
The whole verification thing is so odd. It seems to sit in some ill-defined place between “this account is what it claims to be” and “this person is important and we think you should listen to them”. The former category has value, and they should just open it up to everyone.
And if they’re trying do the latter - where Twitter is the arbiter of who deserves gravitas - they’re kidding themselves.
