Isn’t the point of the blue check to prevent fraud? If they are an academic but not public figures, Twitter has a vested interest in verifying their identity. Twitter doesn’t want to get into the business of deciding who is and who isn’t an “academic”…

Should probably just institute a policy that gives out blue checks once you reach a set number of followers and verify your identity with Twitter

Twitter's verification is shady af. We have an interesting govt-affiliated figure who was proved to have faked his Masters and PhD credentials - he's verified.
