So I’m moving soon. So far, I’ve found: my PhD diploma. Notes for my masters thesis. Boxes of things labeled “to sort”.
Boxes of thing with no label. Calendars never used, going back, umm, a few years. Maybe many years. Stuff (??) other people left, long time ago. Fun day.

Anyway if anybody needs two large boxes of various cables connecting various things no longer in production, perhaps, happy to mail them to you!

So when I used to work in software, the most fun part of updating legacy code was hitting the /*make sure Jeff fixes this! Important!*/. Jeff who? Lost to memory. Fix what? Well that’s how I paid my way through school. It feels like that, except nobody’s paying me now.

Wait, never mind. I just found my nitrox and advanced open water certifications. All good, day has been redeemed. (No, diving not happening any time soon, but I now have one more thing I can pretend that I’ll be doing sometime in the imaginable future, like in my lifetime maybe.)

Wait, plot twist. Power failure that’s supposed to last at least four hours. Truck arriving tomorrow morning. On the one hand, I can pack by daylight. On the other hand, I have a fully-charged laptop and an article I’m working on, and really want to finish. Oh, how they tempt us.

Update: had one long power outage for hours, and another short one. Excellent for packing! The good news: the moving truck is coming tomorrow morning. The bad news: the moving truck is coming tomorrow morning. The best news? This isn’t coming along. Won’t even pretend to sort.pic.twitter.com/Bmic109GIR

Update: the truck is coming in an hour and I’m chewing coffee. I’m not gonna claim I went through everything, but there are no boxes of cables labeled “to sort” moving to New York. (Three boxes of those are free to a good home. Well, any home. Okay, any recycling place.)

Three has just left! Three boxes of connection cables and wires for devices from who-knows-how-long-ago have not!
Gonna call that a win. Well, until I find out that connector from 1998 for some obscure device somebody put their bitcoin wallet key in is selling for six figures.pic.twitter.com/WZvGNmJDhQ

Look at every item and ask yourself, "does this spark joy?" If it does, put it in the "Sparks Joy" box. Otherwise, put it in one of the other moving boxes.

Sadly, notes from my masters thesis do spark joy. I think I need sharper criteria. (I may or may not have rented storage space for “will kick this can down the road” boxes. Rumors about).
