Seems Dr. Peter Palese of Mount Sinai, who'd signed the Lancet letter calling theories on non-natural origin "conspiracy theories" has changed his mind. Not linking because Daily Mail. CAN WE NOT HAVE SUCH STUFF REPORTED ONLY by Daily Mail? Regular journalists can maybe clarify?pic.twitter.com/EhaPbL1hqH

I think better journalistic reporting of important stuff which doesn't appear in, ahem, the most sensationalistic and terrible outlets (that little part *is* news but it is surrounded by garbage, innuendo and crap) might help?

WSJ op-ed(!) to the rescue. Unfortunately, the proportion of good-faith discussions about lab leak hasn't increased that much.https://www.wsj.com/articles/the-science-suggests-a-wuhan-lab-leak-11622995184 …

Meh. "It appeared in humans already adapted into an extremely contagious version." A few variants would like to disagree... Tragically, in fact.

Unfortunately the United States doesn’t have any outlets like @nytimes or @TheAtlantic that could report on these things.

The Lancet should start publishing its journals exclusively in the National Enquirer

Maybe those are the only outlets actually conducting journalism, sad as that is

Actual science writers aren't doing much better. I have seen some real garbage on this topic from two top science writers in the past 48 hours. One was downright supercilious!

This origin question has been challenged for months. It’s only gaining attention NOW because health officials are receptive to other theories. Another valid question is: why haven’t news outlets explored these theories months ago? Time to call in @ICIJorg or Spotlight? Lol 🧐

The media mishandling of this story is as big a scandal as the story itself, if not far bigger.

Perhaps you should look into <16 y.o. cases in Sweden where they attended school unmasked (hint, none died) That real world example might be better than speculation on hypotheticals that leads to advocating retrofitting ventilation in every US school

The @radioopensource and Vanity Fair pieces were both good - IDK yet bc the WIV is in Wuhan because it is a covid hotspot. Nevertheless it is a possibility and biosecurity risk was massively underestimated. Another expert failure https://radioopensource.org/lab-leak/  & https://www.vanityfair.com/news/2021/06/the-lab-leak-theory-inside-the-fight-to-uncover-covid-19s-origins …
