I thought this had already been established as the primary means by which SARS-CoV-2 variants emerge. Wasn’t it determined that Alpha evolved in a persistently infected UK patient?

I don't understand why this is surprising. It's fascinating that they catch it in the action, but the longer virus stays in a host, the higher the chance it'll mutate (and be studied by scientists). What's the alternative? Virus mutating in the air?
