It should be unthinkable that more people might die of COVID *after* we have vaccines that could save them. Yet, now with even more transmissible variants and little vaccine equity, that's what may happen. The emergency is great and billions are at risk. https://www.nytimes.com/2021/05/28/opinion/covid-vaccine-variants.html …pic.twitter.com/QNDvi5PDr1

Thank you for not naming the variants based on their originating countries. Really appreciate that 🙏🏻

I tried so hard, though I had to mention where it was first detected, and ended up using the very clumsy lineage convention, but yeah. I do not like how we do it right now.

It’s still way better than calling it the x variant. It makes sense to point out the lineage since using just 1.617.2 would not really be able to project the havoc that this variant caused in India. Also the line about oxygen therapy. Just wow!No one should be in India’s shoes🥺

Yeah, the huge problem is that one is much easier to remember than a rando string of numbers. Even a date first detected or something would be easier than 76.846.79879487.49875.493.8574975.4 names >.< Thank you for a well laid out thread

I know what would be useful to me, is to just number them from discovery. So the first variant, call it Variant #1, and then Variant #2... that also gives us some idea of how many variants there are and so on... <sigh>

I like scare quotes: the 1918 “Spanish” flu, the B.1.1.7 “Indian” variant. They say it's not really what it should be called, but it's what you may have heard.

WHO now uses the Greek alphabet to name the variants, but it will just add confusion & when the 24 letters will have been used, they probably add numbers... Maybe they should ask the World Meteorological Organization how to name the variants properly.
