"Adjusting for county-level incidence, COVID-19 incidence was 37% lower in schools that required teachers and staff members to use masks, and 39% lower in schools that improved ventilation, compared with schools that did not use these prevention strategies."https://twitter.com/EricTopol/status/1395757990758686721 …

And once again, unlike the benefits associated with mitigations based on aerosol dominance, masks and ventilation, the two *costly* mitigations in schools based on theories of droplet prominence, barriers and desk-spacing, were not associated with a real reduction of COVID risk.pic.twitter.com/S1urRPzzMf

It's hard to disentangle precise effect sizes with such studies—they can't be experiments. Still, when multiple studies show improvements associated with teacher/staff masks and/or ventilation, but none or even worsening with desk barriers AND aerosol scientists explaining why...

Aerosol scientists kept telling me that plexiglass barriers might be making things *worse* by blocking ventilation. Just out in Science. Desk shields associated with *increased* illness risk in schools. Closing playground? Also uptick. So many upshots. https://science.sciencemag.org/content/early/2021/04/28/science.abh2939 … pic.twitter.com/JZs0CcdCO8

two cents: I covered the reopen-schools debate in Philly. The promise was always, "we'll follow the science," but the vibe was more like, "we're gonna chase the science until we catch it and corner it and shake it down until an answer falls out. Any answer. Then we run with it."

Cheap small portable HEPA air circulators in combo with the plexiglass would do a good job

This is an easy fix-just drill holes in the plexiglass partitions-was that so hard?

Am I reading this correctly? 1-2 cases fewer per 500 students over the course of a month, if masks and ventilation implemented? Helpful, but prudent to share in context of limited severity outcomes for this age group - I’m concerned about social/emotional/psychological impact too

Seems like - if a community case rate is low by September let the kids go mask free. If it increases by Thanksgiving 2021, sure put them back on. But this study was during the peak last winter right? Unlikely we get back to that place again
