Here is Seychelles' COVID outbreak compared to India's. 37% of infected people have received both doses of China's Sinopharm vaccine. https://www.cnbc.com/2021/05/13/seychelles-most-vaccinated-nation-on-earth-but-covid-19-has-surged.html … I am concerned about the efficacy of this vaccine.pic.twitter.com/fi8CHn06YU

I wouldn’t compare. One is a tiny ~300k person country; the other is one billion+ people with 45% test positivity in some states. Plus only 57% of that small country received the Sinopharm, rest have AZ. And the hospitalized are overwhelmingly unvaccinated or have comorbidities.

I saw a figure of 80% hospitalized were not vaccinated OR had comorbidities. That's still a significant amount of breakthroughs, especially if they're using a liberal definition of comorbidities.https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2021/5/12/who-reviewing-seychelles-data-after-fully-vaccinated-get-covid …

I appreciate the point that @zeynep makes about severities. And I recognize the goal of encouraging vaccinations. But if there are serious differences in levels of protection that emerge from these "natural experiments" we shouldn't shove them under the rug.

Not shoving them under the rug. The actual details matter very much when interpreting what the differences mean. More positive cases, obviously. That’s not the big deal it appears to be, at least yet, once you drill down into it. Sure, let’s keep watching.

Fair. I would like to know better exactly how much more likely Sinopharm vaccinated individuals were to contract Covid, by severity. Same with AZ. Seems important for us to get a handle on relative vaxx efficacy, something that is critical to know going forward.

According to our India @CompCoRe_STS team, India had very low levels of testing bc of resource constraints. As you can see from the graph, India’s testing rates are on par w countries that have the pandemic under control. I suspect that’s not the case for Seychelles.pic.twitter.com/U5Y9BXNo4f

So small vs big country difference is important here.
