(I had an earlier version of this for my newsletter). We have this in multiple realms: complex systems with significant fragilities and vulnerabilities where we treat near-misses (like 2003 SARS) as things we can now ignore, rather than the alarm that should get us moving to fix.

On the news that the ransomware actors behind the Colonial Pipeline shutdown had received $90 million from 47 victims in Bitcoin before shutting down: As I say it in my article, a lot of realities about Bitcoin etc. are not well-understood because it's been let be. Yes! Other analog networks such as supply chains and Just In Time manufacturing are just as vulnerable, as shown by the pandemic, chip shortages & BREXIT. Combine the two as in the Colonial Pipeline hack and you have a fine stew. Vulnerabilities have outstripped security.

Don't believe increased sentences will do anything, as you say, most people think they will not be caught. Very few hackers are caught, especially the ones selling the hacking as a service. 1/ international treaties against hacking. 2/more responsibility for sw/hw suppliers 3/

Continued 3/proactive scanning by say the FBI and issuance of e.g. "security tickets" to companies. 4/ Banning non-individual default pw. BTW, my new router I received last week had admin/admin as user/pw
5/ Mandating security update possibilities for hw (routers/printers/TV)

Excellent article Indeed best solution is likely "better regulation up and down technical stack, so that negative externalities become internal issues for companies, thus responsible for solving the problems they create." Unfortunately this issue is prevalent in other areas 1/
