The CDC mask guidance switched too fast without enough explanation and overlooks key sociological factors for indoor mask mandates—especially to protect workers and the immunocompromised. Better to have announced benchmarks—and kept it up just a bit more. https://www.nytimes.com/2021/05/14/opinion/coronavirus-masks-vaccines.html …pic.twitter.com/wedLXzHlwr

My $.02: It’s not just that vaxed have lowered personal risk they have far less transmission potential in setting of breakthrough infection so risk of a vaxed person transmitting to an immunocompromised individual is tiny Since not a mandate, vaxed ppl can choose to wear masks

The problem is the sociology: it's not enforceable anymore. Indoors (like in grocery stores) it's all or nothing, to be honest. The people refusing to vaccinate, for example, are not likely to be voluntarily wearing mask. So my worry isn't transmission from the vaccinated.

Brief summary of results on variants, and surveillance from PHE report yesterday, & ONS today: Worryingly we are continuing to see rapid rises of B.1.617.2 (variant identified in India) - which seems to be highly prevalent across England. 🧵

is your primary concern that the guidance will lead to an increase in transmission from those who chose not to be vaccinated to those who want to be vaccinated but are currently unable - b/c of age restrictions, etc - who are partially vaxxed, and who are waiting to be vaxxed?

More unvaccinated will die now. So I guess it’s just oh well.

I usually respect your advice and opinion but this “sociology” shit feels a bit authoritarian. No places in the country have dangerous levels of covid. There are more effective treatments. Vaccines are widely available. The goalposts have to stay still at some point.

Yep. I expect we’ll see a little bump in new cases in the next month, whereas before we were on a sharp downward trajectory

It would help a lot if you could spell out exactly what the worry is. Saying there’s a sociological aspect is (to me) not self-evident. Maybe I’m missing something.

CDC has said unvaccinated people should still be masked, but this isn't reasonably actionable for the most establishments. They aren't going to have a bouncer checking IDs. They will implement blanket policies that render the CDC guidance meaningless
