Huge deal. Some very eminent virologists, including Dr. Baric who worked with the lab in Wuhan, have published a statement that both zoonotic origin and lab accident are "viable" as origin. (Social media claims aren't scientific consensus, part zillion). https://science.sciencemag.org/content/372/6543/694.1 …pic.twitter.com/jhJl8IAyBG

Note they are *not* saying we know but are clearly saying demotion of lab link as less or unlikely is not supported by data yet. So often a Narrative™ emerges here that experts think A or B. Reality: many eminent experts are too busy for Twitter, and some questions are complex.pic.twitter.com/bwKokV34pf

Finally, I appreciate this. Questioning Chinese government statements or lab safety or a particular kind of research is not racist *by itself.* That is a great disservice to China's own scientists and dissidents. Racism exists, but opposite of it isn't can't question governments.pic.twitter.com/uAe3QlkNhL

Do note that there are many possibilities that combine some of these theories (zoonotic origin *and* lab screw-up, for example). Personally, besides "I don't know", the only one I can discount is the bioweapon research: that makes no sense. Rest: needs a genuine investigation.

I was wondering when or whether @zeynep would go near the radioactive issue of possible SARS-CoV-2 lab escape. Like a moth to the flame, I guess. Remember @zeynep writing watch what the Chinese do, not what they say; will they start clamping down on viral GoF research?

Researching this issue takes one into a bat cave full of craziness with a few notable exceptions; I find @Ayjchan and @R_H_Ebright most lucid of the people who think that a lab leak or accident is possible.

At this point, it’d honestly be so unsurprising to find out COVID started because a bat being shipped to Wuhan for study escaped like during transfer from delivery truck to lab cage and everyone watching it fly away was like: “It’s one bat. What’s the worst that can happen?”

Usually they take a dab out of the bat’s butt and let it go. The Rocky Mountain lab near where I lived had a mouse escape inside their BSL4 lab when it wasn’t as anesthetized as they had hoped so accidents can and do happen.https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation/2014/09/22/biolab-safety-incidents-lassa-fever-h7n9-burkholderia/15908753/ …

Yeah, if you search “gain of function” you’ll find nonsense that Fauci is the devil and the Chinese were developing bioweapons. These people won’t believe that the intent of Zheng Li Shi is to understand and pandemic threats and evaluate countermeasures.
